Barcode Security and Traceability System at Galway Fertility Clinic
Safety is at the heart of all the procedures carried out in Galway Fertility Clinic. We installed the Matcher™ electronic witnessing system in 2006, becoming the first IVF clinic in the world to do so.
The introduction of the Matcher™ (electronic barcode) system has enhanced our IVF lab traceability, eliminating the possible risks of egg, sperm or embryo misidentification due to human error, thereby reassuring our clients of the highest level of monitoring throughout their treatment cycles.
The Matcher™ system is designed to confirm, match and monitor every procedure and process that occurs within the IVF laboratory. It provides a photographic record of every procedure, recording what procedure is carried out, the time and date of the procedure was carried out and by whom.
When clients attend the clinic for treatment they are allocated a unique identification number that will be used throughout all their cycles and procedures for identification and traceability. Clients attending for IVF and IUI treatment cycles will have their photograph taken using Matcher™ and their unique ID labels and labware labels are generated. These barcode labels are then used on all the labware in which their eggs, sperm and embryos are contained and all their associated paperwork. The Matcher™ system also enables us to record and track all labware and culture media used throughout an IVF or IUI cycle. It ensures that all containers, laboratory consumables or culture media that come into contact with eggs, sperm or embryos is recorded and is linked to the correct patient.
