Choosing to use donor sperm is not an easy decision for some clients, however for some it is their only option.
The options for donor sperm use are discussed with clients on an individual basis with our medical consultants and with the embryology team. Every effort is made to match the donor’s physical characteristics and blood group to those of the client.
We will source, import and store enough sperm for a number of attempts at treatment. We will also store sperm for future treatment should you become pregnant and wish to have another sibling.
Counselling support is an essential part of embarking on donor sperm treatment.
When is Donor Sperm Treatment Recommended?
Donor sperm can be appropriate in the following situations:
- Single women who wish to pursue fertility treatment.
- Same Sex (lesbian) couples using Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) or IVF as appropriate.
The donor sperm is imported from licensed donor sperm banks overseas (www.cryosinternational.com / www.europeanspermbank.com). The donors may be anonymous or open (some details of the donor are known). Some donors have “extended profiles” and are more expensive than those with a “basic profile”. Currently there is no Irish donor sperm bank. Galway Fertility Clinic does not use known, non-partner sperm donation.
