Galway Fertility Clinic was in attendance at the Fifth Irish Congress of Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Perinatal Medicine in the Galway Bay Hotel on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th November 2019. This was a great opportunity for us to discuss the benefits of genetic testing of embryos to our colleagues in Obstetrics. Many patients with recurrent pregnancy loss, could benefit from availing of Preimplantation Genetic Testing Service, an innovative treatment, and shorten their journey to a successful pregnancy.
A Preimplantation Genetic Test involves the embryologist taking a biopsy of the embryos at the blastocyst stage, which is sent to the genetic testing laboratory for analysis. Meanwhile, the embryo is safely cryopreserved and stored in the Galway Fertility Clinic Laboratory. The genetics laboratory examines the chromosomal make up of all 46 chromosomes within the biopsy and allows us to deselect chromosomally abnormal embryos.
Dr Eithne Lowe, our Medical Director, explains “This is of particular benefit for patients where their cycle of IVF results in a number of what appear to be good quality embryos, which currently are replaced one at a time in repeated cycles. By identifying those that are chromosomally normal, these can be thawed and transferred first, with an increased chance of a successful pregnancy”. This is exciting news for couples with recurrent miscarriages or repeated failed attempts at IVF in particular.
